Toyota Yaris Cross Purchase Guide

The Yaris Cross is a compact SUV launched by Toyota in August 2020, built on the TNGA platform (GA-B) shared with the Yaris. Both the gasoline and hybrid versions are offered in 2WD and 4WD. Thanks to its easy-to-handle size and excellent fuel economy, it has become a best-seller competing for the top spot in Japan's SUV sales. The model sold under the same name in Southeast Asia since 2023 is a separately engineered vehicle built on a Daihatsu-derived platform, and it differs from the Japanese-market version underneath. On the used market, plentiful supply makes it easy to find one, but because the vehicles are relatively new, prices tend to be higher than others in the same class, and you should also check the age restrictions on imports in your destination country.
First-Generation Yaris Cross (2020–): An Urban SUV Built on the Same GA-B Platform as the Yaris, with 4WD Available on Both Gasoline and Hybrid Models

Strengths of the First-Generation Yaris Cross
A compact SUV that adds cargo space and 4WD to the Yaris's nimble handling and low fuel consumption
The first-generation Yaris Cross went on sale in Japan in August 2020. Toyota positions it as an urban compact SUV that inherits the Yaris lineup's "nimble driving," "advanced safety and security technology," and "low fuel consumption." Development was led by Europe. The car was scheduled to debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, but when the show was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19, the premiere was moved online. Its underpinnings are the GA-B platform, the TNGA platform for compact cars shared with the Yaris hatchback. However, it is not simply a Yaris with a raised ride height. It has its own exterior design, and the body is a size larger than the Yaris. The powertrain is a 1.5L inline three-cylinder, offered in both gasoline and hybrid versions. What Toyota emphasized most at launch was that 4WD was available on both the gasoline and hybrid models. The launch lineup consisted of four gasoline grades and three hybrid grades, and every one of them could be had with either FWD or 4WD. This means you can decide between a hybrid for fuel economy or a gasoline model for a lower purchase price, independently of the drivetrain. That is a major advantage for people who live in snowy regions or occasionally drive on unpaved roads. Toyota announced that the hybrid model achieved fuel economy among the best in the world for its SUV class. Cargo space is another selling point, and Toyota describes the car as having "an uncompromising focus on utility." It was designed with a policy of fitting plenty of preventive safety and comfort features even in the compact class, making it a good fit for people who don't want to compromise on equipment just because the car is small. In Japan, its main buyers are private owners who use it for commuting, shopping, and weekend leisure. In the development story Toyota published, there is an anecdote about the development team being surprised at how many rival models were owned by women. The car aims to combine a size that is easy to handle in town with a distinctly SUV look. At launch, genuine "GR Parts" that enhance its sporty exterior were also offered, and some used examples are fitted with these parts.
Weaknesses of the First-Generation Yaris Cross
Early-production recalls, the 2024 shipment suspension, and rear-seat space are worth checking beforehand
In December 2020, shortly after launch, a recall was filed covering the Yaris and Yaris Cross. When choosing an early example, check the maintenance record book or contact a Toyota dealer with the chassis number to confirm that the recall work has been completed. Once the car has been exported, getting this addressed becomes difficult. In June 2024, Toyota disclosed improper conduct in certification testing for Japan's vehicle type approval, and the Yaris Cross was among the affected models whose shipments were temporarily suspended. New-car supply was disrupted during this period, which is believed to have affected used-car prices as well. The interior reflects the compromises of a compact SUV. Reviews note that rear-seat legroom and headroom are not generous, so if you often take long trips with four adults, it's worth sitting in the actual car to check. Higher grades with large-diameter wheels are said to have a somewhat firm ride. Both are tendencies common to compact SUVs of this size. Also look at differences between individual cars depending on how they were used. Many 4WD examples were used in snowy regions and are prone to underbody rust from road salt. Check the suspension mounting points, brake lines, and the area around the exhaust from underneath. Former rental cars are also said to be on the market. Since the interior and seats may show more wear than the mileage suggests, it's reassuring to check the usage history as well. Equipment and grade contents vary by model year, so even for the same "Yaris Cross," you need to check the equipment by matching the model year with the grade name. Production is also split by market: Japanese-market cars are built by Toyota Motor East Japan, and European-market cars at a plant in France. The car sold in your local market is not necessarily the same as the Japanese-spec version, so it's wise to check parts compatibility in advance. Also note that because the car is so recent, it cannot be brought into countries that only allow imports of older vehicles, such as under the U.S. "25-year rule."
Rivals of the First-Generation Yaris Cross
Honda Vezel (2nd Generation)
The easiest car to compare it with, from the same period and the same class, is the second-generation Honda Vezel. It went on sale in Japan in 2021, and its mainstay is a hybrid called "e:HEV." Like the Yaris Cross, it is available with either FWD or 4WD. In a nutshell, the difference between the two is "compactness and fuel economy" versus "interior space and refinement." The Vezel's body is a size larger than the Yaris Cross, and thanks to Honda's unique layout that places the fuel tank under the front seats, it is said to have generous rear legroom. The Vezel suits people who often drive with family or regularly carry adults in the back seat. The Yaris Cross's strengths are its size, which is easy to handle on narrow roads and in parking lots, and its low fuel consumption. Because 4WD is available on both the gasoline and hybrid models, you can also choose to drive on snowy roads while keeping the purchase price down. In the used market, the Yaris Cross has the added advantage of a large number of cars and a wide choice of model years, grades, and colors. The Yaris Cross suits people who usually drive alone or with one passenger and want to keep daily fuel costs down. If we were to name one more, it would be the Nissan Kicks, which also went on sale in Japan in 2020. It is offered only with "e-POWER," in which the engine generates electricity and a motor drives the wheels, making it a good comparison for those who like the acceleration unique to motor drive. When comparing sales figures, be careful about how they are counted in Japan. In Japan's new-car sales rankings by model name, the Yaris Cross is combined with the Yaris hatchback and counted together as "Yaris." In September 2020, the month after launch, the "Yaris" including the Yaris Cross ranked No. 1 among passenger cars. If you see figures overseas claiming "the Yaris is Japan's best-selling car," the Yaris Cross is included in them. As it is a popular model, there continue to be many used examples available, making it easy to find one.
