Used PEUGEOT Import and Purchase Guide | An Explanation of Popular Models and How to Choose
Peugeot is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world, originating from a family business started by the Peugeot brothers, Jean-Frederic and Jean-Pierre II, who converted a watermill in Érimontcourt (Doubs) into a steelworks in 1810. It was officially established as "Société Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot" on April 2, 1896, by Armand Peugeot. In 1976, Peugeot acquired the struggling French automaker Citroën, forming the holding company "PSA Group (Peugeot S.A.)." PSA continued to expand and included brands like Germany's Opel. In 2021, it merged with the Italy-American FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) in a 50-50 merger, resulting in the creation of the world’s fourth-largest automotive group, "Stellantis," with Peugeot being a central player driving its success. Peugeot continues to showcase the lion trademark it applied for in 1858 as its emblem, offering a diverse lineup that includes small hatchbacks, SUVs, station wagons, and passenger vans derived from commercial vehicles. The sporty yet comfortable ride quality and the i-Cockpit, which combines a small diameter steering wheel with high-positioned instrumentation, are features common across recent models and are often recognized as quintessentially Peugeot. In Japan, models such as the 208, 2008, 308, 308SW, 3008, 5008, 508, and Rifter have been sold, providing a wide range of options in the used car market. Powertrains can be selected from gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrids, with front-wheel drive being the standard, alongside a four-wheel drive PHEV that powers the rear wheels with a motor. Since equipment and specifications vary by model year and grade, it is practical to narrow down imported vehicles after understanding these differences.
The reason why used PEUGEOT cars are popular abroad.

The reason buyers overseas are attracted to Peugeot is its unique French character, which differs from German and Japanese cars. In addition to a wide range of models, the variety of powertrains and the attention to detail in the driver's area have also become popular in recent times. The units available in Japan include diesel, EV, and plug-in hybrids, and even within the same model name, the specifications can vary significantly based on the year and trim level. Here, we will organize three key factors that buyers can easily use for their decision-making.
Available in 1.5L and 2.0L BlueHDi diesel options.
In July 2016, Peugeot launched three models in Japan equipped with the clean diesel "BlueHDi": the 308 Allure BlueHDi, 308 GT BlueHDi, and 508 GT BlueHDi. Among these, the 308 Allure features a 1.6L diesel engine with a maximum output of 88 kW (120 ps) at 3,500 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm at 1,750 rpm, while both the 308 GT and 508 GT are powered by a 2.0L engine. In December 2018, a new downsized BlueHDi engine, reducing from 1.6L to 1.5L, was added to the 308 lineup. This DV5 engine's displacement decreased from 1560 cc to 1498 cc, which fits into Japan’s automobile tax classification of 1.5L or less, lowering the annual tax from 39,500 yen to 34,500 yen. As a result of the reduced maintenance costs, the 1.5L models saw considerable circulation domestically. Before export, it is advisable to check the DPF regeneration history and the urea water (AdBlue) refilling records. Vehicles primarily used for short-distance driving are said to accumulate soot in the exhaust system more easily. Additionally, attention should be paid to potential issues with the AdBlue tank and related components.
e-208 and e-2008 EVs, and the 3008 GT HYBRID4 PHEV.
The e-208 and e-2008 were introduced domestically in 2020, and their range per charge was extended to 395 km and 380 km, respectively, in the 2022 specification change under the WLTC mode. However, the sales performance in 2021 was only about 11% and 13% of the total series, so the number available in the used market is more limited compared to gasoline cars. The lithium-ion battery used for driving comes with an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty, but it is necessary to confirm with the dealer if this warranty is still valid after export. The PHEV model is the 3008 GT HYBRID4, launched in January 2021, which combines a 1.6L turbo engine (200 PS/300 Nm) with a dedicated PHEV e-EAT8 motor (110 PS/320 Nm) and a separate rear motor (112 PS/166 Nm), resulting in a total system output of 300 PS/520 Nm, a battery capacity of 13.2 kWh, and an EV range of 64 km under the WLTC mode. For vehicles that have been charged frequently, differences in battery condition can be more pronounced, so checking the charging history and the presence of charging cables can provide peace of mind.
i-Cockpit and the evolving generation of driving assistance and display systems.
The visibility of the gauges above the small-diameter steering wheel can change depending on height and seat position. For imports where you can't physically sit in the car, it is practical to request photos taken from the driver's seat from the seller. In the 2021 NEW 3008, alongside the refreshed front face, there was an enhancement of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The new 3008, introduced in Japan in 2025, features the "PEUGEOT Panoramic i-Cockpit," which combines a 21-inch panoramic screen with the i-Cockpit, and has customizable "i-Toggles" placed in the center of the dashboard. Up to ten shortcut keys can be set. Since display languages and navigation region settings are often shipped in Japanese specifications, please confirm whether switching is possible beforehand. There are concerns that touch controls may become less responsive over time, leading to requests for operational checks.
This is the popular used car from PEUGEOT.
In Japan, Peugeot offers a range that includes B-segment hatchbacks, large SUVs with three rows of seats, MPVs derived from commercial vans, and coupes. Since the character of the same model can change with each generation, we will categorize and organize eight representative models.
208
The compact hatchback is sought after internationally for its maneuverability in urban areas and the availability of right-hand drive. The first generation debuted in the fall of 2012 with the concept "RE-GENERATION," and sales in Japan began on November 1, 2012. Initially, there were three variants: the 3-door GT (1.6L 4-cylinder turbo + 6-speed MT) and the 5-door Premium and Cielo (1.6L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated + 4-speed AT). In December of the same year, the Allure, featuring a 1.2L 3-cylinder + 5-speed MT, was added. In January 2014, a model equipped with the "PureTech," which combines a 1.2L 3-cylinder (EB2 type) with a stop-and-start system and ETG5, was released. The second generation launched on July 2, 2020. Since ETG5-equipped vehicles are said to have a unique shifting characteristic, it would be beneficial to obtain video footage of the car in motion to observe its behavior.
2008
The 2008 is a compact crossover based on the 208, designed for buyers who primarily use it in urban areas, balancing practicality and fuel efficiency with its elevated ride height. The first generation was unveiled in Europe in 2013 and was introduced to Japan as well. The combination of a 1.2L three-cylinder turbo engine and a six-speed automatic transmission was expanded to the 2008 in March 2016, following its introduction in the 308 and 208. Starting from the second generation, buyers can choose not only the gasoline variant but also the EV version, the e-2008, which can be difficult to distinguish visually; it's best to verify the vehicle registration document for clarity. Additionally, there are versions equipped with off-road driving modes, so checking the tire brand and wear patterns, as well as the operation of parking assistance sensors and cameras, can help reduce future complications.
308
This C-segment hatchback is a great choice for export, thanks to its high ratings in Europe and its availability in the Japanese market. The first generation was launched in Europe in 2007 and was also introduced in Japan. The second generation won the European Car of the Year award in 2014. The Japanese model comes with options for PureTech gasoline and BlueHDi diesel engines, with front-wheel drive. The quality of interior materials and equipment varies significantly by model year, so it's quicker to specify the grade name when searching. For models with a glass roof, it's advisable to check the opening and closing operation, the ceiling lining for water stains, and the functionality of electrical components like power windows and door mirrors.
3008
This C-segment SUV is chosen for its practicality and comfort on long journeys. The first generation was launched in Japan in 2010, featuring a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second generation saw a significant shift from a crossover-style design to a more sculpted SUV appearance, and now includes the diesel variant, the 3008 GT BlueHDi, alongside gasoline options. The latest generation, with larger wheels, is said to face more issues with tire wear and rim damage, particularly for those used in urban areas with many bumps. It's important to pay attention to the operation of the driving mode switch, especially for versions equipped with off-road driving modes.
5008
There is a demand for this model with three rows of seats for large passenger capacity in export markets as well. The first generation was introduced in 2009 as a three-row seat minivan and went on sale in Japan on February 25, 2013. It was the first minivan introduced to the Japanese market under the Peugeot brand, featuring two grades: the 5008 Premium and the 5008 Cielo, equipped with a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels. The second generation was turned into an SUV, measuring 4640mm in length, 1840mm in width, and 1650mm in height, with options for a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo or a 2L 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, accommodating seven passengers. All seats, including the third row, are independently adjustable. Repeated removal and sliding of the third row can cause wear on the rails and locks, so it's reassuring to see real photos showing the movement of the moving parts and the condition of the cargo floor.
508
This D-segment sedan is popular among buyers who prioritize quietness and stability at high speeds. The first generation was introduced to Japan in 2011, featuring a combination of a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. In the second generation, it takes on a fastback shape with frameless doors, resembling a lower-slung coupe rather than a traditional sedan. Due to its lower ride height, it's prone to leaving marks from scraping the bottom of the front spoiler on curbs or the ramps of multi-story parking lots, so it's worth checking photos taken from below. Additionally, it's important to verify whether there has been any past repair work, assess the fit of the front end, and check for any fogging inside the LED headlights.
Lifter
This is a passenger MPV based on a commercial van, related to models like the Citroën Berlingo and Fiat Doblo. It is chosen for its dual sliding doors and boxy cargo space. In Japan, a special edition called the "Debut Edition" was released in October 2019, ahead of the official introduction of the catalog model in November 2020. The Debut Edition features a 1.5L clean diesel engine "DV5" paired with an Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission, along with advanced grip control with five modes. The cargo space capacity is 597L with five passengers and reaches 2126L when the second row is folded down. Following this, the Allure and GT trims, along with a long GT version seating seven, were added, all built on the same EMP2 platform as the 3008 and 5008. A facelift version, the Lifter and Lifter Long, was launched on August 22, 2024. One notable characteristic of this model is the limited color options; the Debut Edition is available in only three body colors. Unlike domestic minivans where one might choose from stock of white and black, searching by color significantly narrows down the choices. When checking used units previously used for transporting goods, it's important to inspect the sliding door rails, rubber bump stops, and wear on the cargo floor.
RCZ
The 2+2 sports coupe, known for its limited production period and unique design, has attracted interest for collection purposes. The platform is shared with the 308, and production took place at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. It was released in Japan in July 2010 and ceased sales with the final version in September 2015. The car features a 1.6L direct-injection turbo engine, with the left-hand drive 6-speed manual version producing 147 kW/275 Nm, and the right-hand drive 6-speed automatic version producing 115 kW/240 Nm, both with front-wheel drive. It is equipped with an active rear spoiler that deploys in two stages according to vehicle speed. The higher-end RCZ R is boosted to 270 horsepower and comes with a limited-slip differential and specialized brakes. This is a vehicle where careful consideration should be given after checking the operation of the spoiler, any oil leaks around the turbo, and the history of aftermarket part replacements.
Popular engines in used PEUGEOT cars

The Peugeot models available in Japan range from a 1.2L three-cylinder gasoline engine to a 2.0L diesel engine, resulting in different characteristics even within the same model name. I will organize the commonly encountered 5-series models along with the maintenance areas to check.
EP6 series 1.6L gasoline turbo (207, RCZ, 3008)
This is a 1.6L inline 4-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine developed in collaboration with BMW, often referred to as the Prince engine. It was sold under the names VTi/THP as part of the EP series engine (which is distinct from the PureTech EB series, primarily centered around a 1.2L 3-cylinder engine). The first-generation 308 offered the EP6DT twin-scroll turbo developed with BMW, as well as the EP6DTS with an overboost function. The RCZ was produced in Graz, Austria, from 2009 to 2015, with European specifications featuring the THP156 and a 200 hp variant of the 1.6L EP6, as well as the THP270 variant of the EP6CDTR. It is safe to consider that even though they share the same 1.6L designation, the specifications differ by model and region. For used parts, there is a benefit in parts commonality; the timing chain kit and oil pump are compatible with the 1.6L engines from the MINI R55/R56/R60, as well as the first-generation 207, 208, 308, 3008, 5008, and RCZ. While this commonality makes finding parts easier for exports, there are concerns regarding cold start noise due to chain stretch, high-pressure fuel pumps, and carbon buildup on the intake valves specific to direct injection engines. It is advisable to check the startup sound and keep a record of the oil change intervals for this engine.
EB2 series 1.2L gasoline turbo (208, 2008, 308)
The EB series features a straight-three-cylinder engine, with the 1.0L model designated as EB0 and the 1.2L model as EB2. The series has been reconfigured with direct injection and high-efficiency turbocharging under the PureTech name, offering a 1.2L turbo version available in two variants: 110hp and 130hp, which debuted in the 2014 308 equipped with the EMP2 platform. The PureTech 110 produces 110ps at 5500rpm and 205Nm of torque, while the PureTech 130 delivers 130ps at 5500rpm and 230Nm at 1750rpm, with the latter featuring an idle stop system. The displacement of the EB2 PureTech130 is 1199cc, with a compression ratio of 10.5. In Japan, the 2019 308 received an upgrade with the EB2 engine paired with an 8-speed EAT8 transmission, and the new 208 introduced in 2020 is equipped with a version producing a maximum output of 74kW. With its peak torque available at 1750rpm, it performs well in both urban and highway driving without needing to rev high. The typical vibrations and sounds of the three-cylinder engine vary more due to specification differences than individual unit differences, making it easier to assess by providing idle noise videos.
DV6 Series 1.6L Diesel Turbo (308)
This is a 1.6L diesel turbo that was introduced to Japan during the early days of BlueHDi. The BlueHDi released in Japan in 2016 offered a 1.6L engine with a maximum output of 120 ps and a peak torque of 300 Nm, as well as a 2.0L engine with 180 ps and 400 Nm. The low RPM torque makes it suitable for highway driving and transporting heavy loads. Subsequently, the DV5 engine was developed with a power output of 130 ps, 10 ps higher than the DV6, and took over as the main engine. Therefore, in the used car market, it belongs to a generation with a limited production period, resulting in fewer units compared to the DV5. In addition to the common checks for diesel engines, it's important to assess the operation of the variable nozzle turbo, the carbon buildup in the EGR valve, the functionality of the glow plugs, and the return volume of the injectors in this engine. For units that take longer to start cold, determining whether the issue lies with the preheating system or the injection system through maintenance records can help avoid misjudgment.
DV5 Series 1.5L Diesel Turbo (308, 2008, Lifter)
This diesel engine is designed as the main alternative to the DV6. In the 308 Allure BlueHDi, it features a 1,498cc turbocharged inline 4-cylinder DOHC diesel engine, producing 96kW (130PS) at 3,750rpm and 300Nm at 1,750rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It utilizes a high-pressure common rail system at 2000 bar, DOHC16 valves, a variable geometry turbocharger, and an electric wastegate. The engine itself weighs 130kg, which is 35kg lighter than the 2.0L DW10 and is almost on par with the 1.6L PureTech gasoline engine. Its lighter nose contributes to commendable handling characteristics. In Japan, this engine was also introduced in the 2008 in 2022, achieving a WLTC mode fuel efficiency of 20.8km/L, with a vehicle weight of 1320kg and 215/60R17 tires. While the space is sufficient for five passengers, there are opinions that it may feel cramped for seven, so if you plan to aim for a longer model, it's advisable to check acceleration impressions through test drives and driving videos for peace of mind.
DW10 series 2.0L diesel turbo (308 GT, 3008, 5008)
This is a 2.0L diesel turbo engine designed for heavier models. It has a bore and stroke of 85.0×88.0mm and a compression ratio of 16.7. The European-spec BlueHDi 180 delivers 177 hp (130 kW) at 3,750 rpm and 400 Nm at 2,000 rpm, featuring common rail technology with injectors supplied by Delphi. When introduced in Japan in 2016, it was noted to have a maximum output of 133 kW (180 hp) at 3,750 rpm and maximum torque of 400 Nm at 2,000 rpm, indicating that the figures differ between the European and Japanese specifications despite both being 2.0L engines. In the 3008, the special edition CROSSCITY BlueHDi launched in 2020 combined the DW10 type 2.0L engine with an electronically controlled 8-speed automatic transmission and advanced grip control with hill descent control. It offers spacious seating for seven and excels in long-distance driving, allowing for smooth operation even while fully loaded. It is advisable to check for oil leaks around the turbo piping and intercooler, soot in the intake pathway, and wear on the engine mounts, especially in units with higher mileage.
Considerations when importing used PEUGEOT cars from Japan.
Even with the same model name, the engine and equipment can change based on the year and version. Be sure to confirm the chassis number, initial registration date, engine type, drive system, emission classification, and grade in the documents, and cross-check these details with the export cancellation registration certificate. Diesel models may come equipped with urea SCR or DPF systems, so it’s important to investigate the emission regulations of the importing country and whether local replenishment and maintenance can be performed. For hybrids, check the condition of the drive battery, the inclusion of a charging cable, and the operation of the electric motor. As there are many features related to driving assistance and electronic control, it will be easier to assess if you ask the seller about the presence of warning lights and diagnostic history. The steering position differs by model and year, and in countries where only right-hand drive vehicles can be registered, it's essential to verify with actual photos of the vehicle. For models derived from commercial vans, such as lifters, it's also important to consider undercarriage rust, usage history, as well as parts supply and maintenance systems in the local area.
