Aqua Purchase Guide

The Aqua is a compact hybrid vehicle specifically designed in a 5-number size, released in Japan in December 2011. Utilizing the hybrid system developed for the Prius, it is compactly designed as a five-door hatchback, balancing fuel efficiency and price, making it one of the most commonly seen hybrids in Japanese cities. In North America, it was sold under the name "Prius C," with sales ending in 2019. In the used car market, there are significant differences between the first generation, which has a large inventory and wide selection, and the second generation, which features a completely overhauled platform. It is practical to choose between them according to budget and age restrictions.
First-generation Aqua (NHP10/NHP10H / 2011–2021) - Japan's best-selling hybrid, packed with Prius technology into a compact size.

The charm of the first-generation Aqua.
With a body length of around 4 meters and equipped with a 1.5L hybrid engine, it has become overwhelmingly common on the roads.
The first-generation Aqua is a hybrid-exclusive vehicle that combines a 1.5L 1NZ-FXE engine with THS II, featuring dimensions of 3,995mm in length, 1,695mm in width, and 1,445mm in height, along with a total displacement of 1,496cc and a vehicle weight of 1,080kg (for the S grade in December 2011), making it a compact size within the 5-number category. After improvements in 2017, the L grade boasts a fuel efficiency of 38.0 km/L in the JC08 mode, while the S, G, and crossover variants achieve 34.4 km/L. In 2013, it topped the new car sales chart with 262,367 units, marking its first time in first place, and it was a massive hit, maintaining the title of the best-selling passenger car for three consecutive years from 2013 to 2015. Its high sales numbers have contributed to a wide selection of used cars and ample parts availability.
Drawbacks of the first-generation Aqua.
Many vehicles have been frequently used as company cars or for shuttle services, and dirt tends to accumulate in the cooling vents of the drive battery.
This generation was popular for commercial vehicles, rental cars, and shuttle services, and the availability of the special specification model "S Business Package" for corporate clients indicates its specific usage. Due to the mix of vehicles with repeated short-distance drives and high mileage, checking the mileage and maintenance records is essential. Particular attention should be paid to the cooling system of the drive battery. In the Aqua, the battery is located under the rear seat, and the air vents are at the rear footwell, making it susceptible to dust accumulation. Some vehicles have been observed with cooling fans blocked by dust. Neglecting this issue could potentially shorten the battery's lifespan, so it is recommended to open the cover at the left rear footwell for inspection when purchasing.
The first-generation Aqua's competitors.
Honda Fit Hybrid
At the same time, the most compared model was the Fit Hybrid. The Fit offers a wide range of options, including gasoline versions, and its center tank layout enhances the usability of the rear seats and cargo space, making it a popular choice that ranked second in sales among passenger cars in fiscal 2014, just behind the Aqua. On the other hand, the Aqua is designed exclusively as a hybrid, focusing on fuel efficiency, and it receives praise for its reliable practical fuel economy and the maturity of its system, developed with the same principles as the Prius. If you prioritize cargo space and rear seat size, the Fit is the better choice; if you prioritize fuel economy and maintenance costs, then the Aqua is the way to go.
Specifications of the first-generation Aqua.
1.5L 1NZ-FXE with THS II, continuously variable transmission (CVT), front-wheel drive only.
- Engine: 1,496cc Inline 4-cylinder DOHC (1NZ-FXE type) + Motor - Transmission: Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) - Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive (FF) - Front Suspension: Strut-type coil spring - Rear Suspension: Torsion beam coil spring - Dimensions (L × W × H): 3,995 × 1,695 × 1,445 mm (as of December 2011 standard body) - Features: Body sizes vary based on model year and specifications. According to the catalog from April 2018, the standard model measures 4,050 × 1,695 × 1,455 mm, while the crossover (DAA-NHP10H) measures 4,060 × 1,715 × 1,500 mm. The minimum turning radius for the standard model is 4.8m, compared to 5.4m for the crossover. The fuel tank capacity is 36L, and the standard model, with a height of under 1,500 mm, is suitable for mechanical parking facilities.
Second-generation Aqua (MXPK10/MXPK11 etc. / 2021 onwards) - A compact HEV designed with a completely revamped interior, built on the new TNGA platform and featuring a new battery technology.

The charm of the second-generation Aqua.
Newly designed chassis and battery, this hybrid excels particularly in urban driving.
The second generation adopts the GA-B platform of TNGA and achieves 35.8 km/L (the highest value for the B grade) in WLTC mode. To differentiate it from the Yaris, the interior space has been expanded, and the quality of the interior finishes has been enhanced. The powertrain consists of a 1.5L dynamic force engine, the M15A-FXE, combined with THS II featuring a reduction mechanism. The drive battery incorporates bipolar nickel-metal hydride batteries, the first of their kind in the world, for all models except for the B grade, which uses a lithium-ion battery. The higher grade batteries have approximately double the output compared to the first generation, contributing to improved acceleration and the expansion of the EV driving range, particularly noticeable in urban areas with heavy traffic and many signals. On September 1, 2025, a significant update was made that included an exterior refresh despite being a minor improvement. The front design of all grades has been revamped to feature a hammerhead motif, transitioning from a friendly appearance to a sharper, more advanced impression. The rear includes a piano black-painted back door garnish, and new 16-inch aluminum wheels and body colors were also introduced. The interior now standardizes a large multi-information display, updates the display audio to the latest version compatible with connected navigation, and includes an HDMI input as standard. In terms of driver assistance, an electric parking brake and brake hold are now standard features, with the detection targets of the pre-collision safety system expanded to include motorcycles. Additional features include collision avoidance support for meeting head-on and constant steering assistance for proactive driving. Details such as a smooth stop to mitigate jolting immediately after stopping and a 30mm reduction in vehicle width when the door mirrors are deployed for easier maneuverability have also been refined. When choosing a used second generation model, it is important to note the significant differences in appearance and equipment before and after the updates.
Disadvantages of the second-generation Aqua.
The model is newer with a higher market value, and I'd like to assess the patterns of usage.
The current generation is seeing higher used car market prices, and in countries with age restrictions like the 25-year rule, these vehicles cannot be imported. Additionally, many Aqua vehicles have been introduced as rental cars, car shares, or company cars, leading to a mix of short-distance repetitive use and high-mileage vehicles, making it essential to check the mileage and maintenance records. Vehicles primarily used for short distances may have a weaker 12V auxiliary battery, and those left unused for long periods are prone to starting issues. The cooling air intake for the drive battery is equipped with a filter, and if it becomes clogged, it could lead to reduced fuel efficiency or battery output; therefore, the owner's manual recommends regular inspections. It's advisable to check before purchase if the meter has ever displayed a message about the need for maintenance on the cooling components of the drive battery and whether the filter is clean. Moreover, the second generation has increased overall height compared to the first generation, providing more headroom in the rear seats. However, due to its aerodynamically focused design, the rear door opening is narrower vertically, meaning taller individuals may need to bend slightly when entering and exiting.
Rivals of the second-generation Aqua.
Nissan Note (E13 model e-POWER)
The Nissan Note is the most comparable electric compact car in the same class and timeframe. The Note uses its engine for power generation and always runs on the motor with its e-POWER system, while the Toyota Aqua combines both engine and motor with its THS II technology, resulting in different efficiencies and noise levels during high-speed cruising. The Aqua features a continuously variable transmission and offers an option for electric all-wheel drive (E-Four) in addition to front-wheel drive. The Note gained popularity for its advanced exterior and interior design. When comparing practicality, it's realistic to consider factors such as trunk shape, rear seat space, and ease of parts supply for export destinations.
Specifications of the second-generation Aqua.
