Daihatsu Move Purchase Guide

The Move is a kei car tall wagon that Daihatsu has been building since 1995, and together with the Suzuki Wagon R, which came before it, it is a staple model that helped popularize this segment. Over successive generations it has focused on low fuel consumption and affordable pricing, and the seventh generation, launched in June 2025, adopts a DNGA (Daihatsu's vehicle design philosophy) platform and replaces the hinged rear doors with sliding doors. On the used market, supply is still limited and prices remain relatively high, and because the model years are so recent, note that it cannot be imported into countries that impose vehicle age restrictions on imports.
7th-Generation Move (2025–): The DNGA Generation That Introduced Rear Sliding Doors for the First Time in the Model's History
Appeal of the 7th-Generation Move
The first full redesign in about ten and a half years, pairing sliding doors with a height wagon that isn't overly tall
The 7th-generation Move went on sale in June 2025, marking its first full redesign in about ten and a half years. Introduced in 1995, the Move is a core Daihatsu model with cumulative sales exceeding 3.4 million units. Built around good fuel economy and affordable pricing, it has evolved over 30 years of successive generations. Daihatsu is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota, specializing in kei cars and compact cars, and has long competed with Suzuki for the top spot in kei car sales. At the end of 2023, it temporarily halted shipments of all models due to a certification testing scandal. The 7th generation is a full redesign of a core model released after that period. The biggest change is the adoption of rear sliding doors, a first for any generation of the Move. Sliding doors are standard on all grades, and upper grades get power sliding doors. Getting in and out of the rear seats is easier even in parking lots with little space between cars, making it simpler to help children in and out or load shopping bags. Kei cars with sliding doors had mainly been tall super-height wagons such as the Tanto. The 7th-generation Move combines sliding doors with a lower height-wagon body. Daihatsu adopted the concept of a "dependable, practical sliding-door wagon for everyday use," targeting buyers who choose cars rationally. The platform is based on DNGA, Daihatsu's design philosophy. It promises improved fundamental performance and safety, and the Smart Assist preventive safety system can also detect pedestrians at night. The design concept is "a neat, dignified design that looks beautiful in motion." A character line running from front to rear and vertically elongated rear combination lamps stand out, giving it a calm look that differs from kei cars emphasizing rounded shapes. Thirteen body colors are available, including two-tone options. Production takes place at Daihatsu Kyushu's Oita (Nakatsu) Plant No. 2 in Oita Prefecture. In Japan, the Move is typically used as everyday transportation for commuting, shopping, and taking children to and from school. With the addition of sliding doors, the 7th generation has become an easier choice for families with small children and for older people who value ease of entry and exit.
Drawbacks of the 7th-Generation Move
As a new generation, used examples are scarce, and hinged doors are not an option
The 7th generation was only released in 2025, so not many units have yet reached the used market. Since most examples are recent models with low mileage, prices remain relatively high. If value is your priority, the more widely available 6th generation will be easier to find. If you are considering export, the newness of the model is an obstacle. It cannot be imported for some time into countries that only allow vehicles a certain number of years past manufacture, such as under the US "25-year rule." Some countries also restrict kei cars or right-hand-drive vehicles themselves, so check the regulations of the destination country first. From the 7th generation onward, the rear doors are sliding doors only. Those who chose the Move for its rear hinged doors because of their lighter weight and easier operation will need to look at previous generations. Sliding doors have more parts and a more complex structure than hinged doors. As a result, the body tends to be heavier, and repair costs after a collision are said to be higher. This is a tendency common to sliding-door vehicles in general. When buying used, it is worth checking the following points: - **Power sliding doors**: Whether they open and close smoothly, without stopping midway or making unusual noises - **Around the doors**: Whether the rails are dirty or worn, and whether there are gaps or misalignment when closed - **Rear sides**: Whether there are signs of repair. Sliding door replacement parts are large, so this area deserves particular attention - **Recalls and service campaigns**: Check the maintenance records to see whether early-production units are affected and whether the work has been completed Daihatsu also offers the Move Canbus, which has sliding doors. With the 7th-generation Move adopting sliding doors, the two models have become closer in character. The choice comes down to design preference, so comparing both will make the decision easier.
Rivals of the 7th-Generation Move
Suzuki Wagon R Smile
The easiest comparison is the Suzuki Wagon R Smile. Bearing the name of Suzuki's mainstay height wagon, the Wagon R, it reached the market earlier as a car with rear sliding doors. Its concept of pairing sliding doors with a body not as tall as super-height wagons like the Tanto or Spacia is the same as that of the 7th-generation Move. The clearest difference is in design. The Wagon R Smile emphasizes a soft feel with a rounded, friendly face and a wide range of colors. The 7th-generation Move promotes a "neat and dignified" design, with a low, calm stance. A simple way to choose is the Wagon R Smile if you want cuteness, and the Move if you prefer a look that isn't too sweet. On the used market, the Wagon R Smile, having been released earlier, is likely to be more plentiful, with a wider choice of model years, mileage, and colors. The 7th-generation Move is a new generation, so while its safety equipment and platform are newer, the selection of available units is limited. The Wagon R Smile suits those who want to keep costs down and choose from many units, while the 7th-generation Move suits those who prioritize the equipment of a newer generation. If sliding doors are not essential, height wagons with rear hinged doors are also worth comparing, such as the Honda N-WGN and Nissan Dayz. Hinged-door cars have simpler construction, make it easier to keep weight down, and are more widely available used. Conversely, if interior space and rear-seat practicality are priorities, super-height wagons such as the Daihatsu Tanto and Suzuki Spacia become candidates. The 7th-generation Move sits between the two. We recommend comparing based on who will ride in the rear seats and what kind of parking spaces you use.
7th-Generation Move Specifications
