Suzuki Spacia Purchase Guide

The Spacia is a tall, boxy kei car (Japan's smallest vehicle class) built by Suzuki, and belongs to the category known in Japan as "kei height wagons." The third generation, launched in November 2023, takes its design motif from a large, sturdy shipping container and comes in two versions: the standard Spacia and the more upscale Spacia Custom. Suzuki dealers promote it as "the Spacia for the whole family," and it is built with family travel firmly in mind, including Suzuki's first-ever Multi-Use Flap for the rear seats. Because it is a recent model, used prices tend to be on the high side, and buyers should note that in some countries it may fall under import restrictions based on vehicle age.
3rd-Generation Spacia (MK94S / 2023–) – The Generation That Aimed to Be the "Main Family Car" with Its Container-Style Box and Rear-Seat Flaps

Strengths of the 3rd-Generation Spacia
Aiming to be chosen as the household's first car rather than a second car, with upgraded rear seating and driver assistance
The 3rd-generation Spacia debuted in November 2023. Its form as a tall kei height wagon with rear sliding doors is the same as its predecessor. However, the design motif changed from the 2nd generation's suitcase to a high-capacity "container," giving it a squarer look that suggests it can hold plenty of cargo. At the launch event, President Toshihiro Suzuki explained that the car was a response to customers who said they wanted "a first car the whole family can use." It is a generation built on the assumption that it will serve as the household's main car, not a small second car. The highlight of the rear seat is the "Multi-Use Flap," a feature adopted for the first time by Suzuki. By changing the angle of the flap at the front edge of the rear seat cushion, it can be used as an ottoman to rest your feet on, a leg support for your thighs, or a stopper to keep items placed on the seat from sliding forward. Every model uses a mild hybrid powertrain. The base engine is the naturally aspirated R06D, and the Spacia Custom is additionally offered with the R06A turbo. All models use a CVT, with FF or 4WD drive. The motor's role is to assist with starting off and acceleration; it is not a system that runs on the motor alone for long distances like a dedicated hybrid vehicle. LED headlamps are standard on all models. Adaptive cruise control (a system that automatically accelerates and decelerates to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead) works down to a full stop and operates in combination with lane-keeping assistance. Upper grades get an electric parking brake and auto brake hold, and a heated steering wheel was adopted for the first time on a Suzuki kei car. In Japan, the car is said to be chosen mainly by families with young children who use it for school runs and shopping, and by households who use it to accompany elderly parents to medical appointments. In December 2023 a 2WD version of the welfare vehicle "Spacia Wheelchair Transport Vehicle" was added, followed by a 4WD version in March 2024. The fact that an accessible-mobility version was offered right after the model change also shows that the car was designed with family transportation in mind.
Weaknesses of the 3rd-Generation Spacia
CVT only, turbo limited to the Custom, and its recent model year can be a barrier to export in some countries
The only transmission is a CVT; a manual is not available. The standard Spacia comes only with the naturally aspirated engine, so if you want a turbo you will need to choose the Spacia Custom HYBRID XS Turbo. Because it places a tall body within the kei car limits of 660cc and 1,475mm overall width, some owners say the naturally aspirated version has little power to spare when carrying four adults and luggage on expressways or long uphill climbs. It is also said to be susceptible to crosswinds at highway speeds on windy days, so in countries with a lot of highway driving, it is worth prioritizing a turbo model. Equipment varies greatly by grade. The electric parking brake is an upper-grade feature, and some versions do not have it. Even within the 3rd generation, you can avoid mistakes by checking the grade name against the equipment list before buying. When buying used, watch for wear caused by family use. Stains on the rear seat cushions and backrests, dents left by child seat installations, and looseness or stiffness in the Multi-Use Flap hinges are hard to spot from photos alone. For peace of mind, open and close the power sliding doors several times to check that they do not stop midway and that the rails make no abnormal noises. The mild hybrid battery and the idling-stop-compatible auxiliary battery are parts that need replacement depending on their age, so check the maintenance records for replacement history. There are driver-assistance sensors around the windshield, so for vehicles that have had the glass replaced, it is important to confirm that calibration (aiming) has been completed. For export, the recent model year becomes a factor. In countries that do not allow imports unless a certain number of years have passed since first registration, this generation is not yet eligible. Conversely, in countries that restrict imports of older vehicles, it is an easy generation to choose. Before purchasing, please check the model-year regulations of the importing country.
Rivals of the 3rd-Generation Spacia
Honda N-BOX (3rd generation)
The most obvious contemporary comparison is the 3rd-generation Honda N-BOX. The N-BOX underwent its model change in October 2023, and the 3rd-generation Spacia arrived about a month later. Both are tall wagons built to kei car standards, and they share the same basic combination of rear sliding doors, a choice of naturally aspirated or turbo engines, a CVT, and FF or 4WD. On the used market they often appear side by side in the same model years, making them easy to compare by price range as well. The difference lies in their philosophies. The N-BOX uses a unique layout with the fuel tank under the front seats, and has long promoted its low floor and high interior ceiling. Flipping up the rear seat cushions to load tall items upright is also a well-known N-BOX feature. The Spacia emphasizes fuel economy by pairing every model with a mild hybrid, and sets itself apart with features that improve passenger comfort, such as the rear Multi-Use Flap. The N-BOX has no such hybrid system. Their market positions are clearly different. The N-BOX has long held the top spot in kei car sales, so there are many on the used market and a wide choice of colors and grades. It is also said to depreciate little, which reassures buyers who value resale value. The Spacia, with fewer units in circulation than the N-BOX, can reportedly be found at a lower price when comparing vehicles in similar condition. As a rule of thumb, the Spacia suits those who prioritize fuel economy and rear-seat comfort features, while the N-BOX suits those who prioritize interior height, a low floor, and ease of finding a used example. Another rival is the Daihatsu Tanto. It features a large opening with no pillar on the passenger side, making it a candidate when ease of entry and exit is the top priority. Note that in December 2023, Daihatsu halted shipments of all models due to certification test irregularities, disrupting supply of the Tanto during this period. As a result, demand is thought to have shifted to the Spacia and N-BOX of the same period.
