Nissan Roox Purchase Guide

The Roox is a kei super-height wagon planned and developed by Nissan under the management of NMKV, a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. Its name derives from "Roomy × Max," and it pursues maximum interior space within the limits of Japan's kei car class, competing with the Honda N-BOX, Suzuki Spacia, and Daihatsu Tanto. The third generation, launched in 2020, shares its mechanicals and equipment largely with the Mitsubishi eK Space and eK X Space. The fourth generation, introduced in 2025, brings a substantially expanded suite of driver-assistance features. On the used market, the third generation is the easier choice thanks to its plentiful supply and now-stable prices, while the fourth generation is the one to consider if you want the latest model and features.
3rd-Generation Roox (2020–2025): A Family-Oriented Super-Height Wagon Planned and Developed by Nissan, Renamed from the Dayz Roox

Strengths of the 3rd-Generation Roox
A family car with raised front seats for a better view, and ProPILOT available even in a kei car
The 3rd-generation Roox was announced in February 2020 and went on sale in March of the same year. With this generation, the name changed from "Dayz Roox" to simply "Roox." The name is a coined word combining "ROOM" and "MAX." It is a kei super-height wagon (a tall, box-shaped kei passenger car) planned and developed by Nissan under the management of NMKV, a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. Nissan positioned this car as the first of the "Nissan Intelligent Mobility" models it would introduce across various classes in 2020. Its main buyers are families raising children. The front-seat hip point (the position of your hips when seated) was raised by 60mm compared to the previous generation, improving the view from the driver's seat. The passenger-side sliding door is available with an optional "Auto Step" to help children and elderly passengers get in and out. The development team explained that they "aimed to be the best in class for interior space and storage capacity." The lineup centers on two lines: the standard "X" and the sharper-looking "Highway Star." A major feature is the availability of the "ProPILOT" driver-assistance system. Whether a car has ProPILOT can be identified by its grade name, as in "Highway Star G Turbo ProPILOT Edition." At launch, Nissan affiliate Autech Japan also released the sporty "AUTECH" and the "Life Care Vehicle," a mobility-assistance model for elderly and disabled passengers. A facelift was announced in April 2023 and went on sale in late June of the same year. The front end adopted Nissan's "new-era V-motion" design, and the interior materials and colors were completely renewed. Safety equipment was also enhanced, with a newly added "Intelligent Rear View Mirror" for improved visibility. With this update, Nissan declared its aim of making a "kei minivan" that makes family outings more enjoyable. The Mitsubishi eK Space / eK X Space are sibling models born under NMKV. When searching for a used one overseas, including cars sold under the Mitsubishi names will widen your options.
Weaknesses of the 3rd-Generation Roox
Equipment varies widely by year and grade, and checking around the sliding doors is essential
The exterior and interior differ before and after the June 2023 facelift. The Intelligent Rear View Mirror was newly added with this update, so early models do not have it. Since the front-end design changed, you can tell an early model from a late model by the front grille in photos. If equipment matters to you, check both the month and year of first registration and the exterior. Not every car has ProPILOT. Confirm the grade name on export documents or auction sheets, and on the actual car, check that it operates and how the warning lights display. Auto Step is also optional, so whether it is fitted varies from car to car. On cars that have it, check that it deploys and retracts properly. Because this car has been widely used for family school runs and pickups, many examples have had their sliding doors opened and closed a great many times. The basics are to check for noise from the rails, whether the doors close properly, and whether the rubber seals (weatherstripping) are damaged. Stains in the rear seats or cargo area, and marks left by child seats, are also clues to how the car has been used. Being tall and boxy, some sway in crosswinds and on curves is unavoidable. This tendency applies to super-height wagons in general. If you often drive on expressways with your family aboard, some recommend a turbo model. Also be careful with the name when searching. The "Dayz Roox" is a different, previous generation, with different equipment and internals. AUTECH and Life Care Vehicle models use dedicated parts, so they cannot be treated the same as regular grades. Also, since these are 2020-or-later models, they may not yet be importable into countries with model-year import restrictions (such as the so-called 25-year rule).
Rivals of the 3rd-Generation Roox
Honda N-BOX
The easiest comparison is the Honda N-BOX of the same period. Both are kei super-height wagons with rear sliding doors, and their uses, such as family school runs and shopping, are nearly identical. The N-BOX is known as a model at the center of sales in Japan's kei car market, and it is praised for its low floor and spacious interior thanks to Honda's unique center tank layout (placing the fuel tank under the front seats). As a used car, the N-BOX's strength is its sheer numbers. It is said to be easy to choose by year, color, and grade, and parts are easy to obtain. On the other hand, because of its popularity, it tends to be priced higher than the Roox for the same year and similar condition. The reasons to choose the Roox lie in its distinctive equipment: the option of ProPILOT, the high front seating position with a good view, the passenger-side Auto Step, and the Intelligent Rear View Mirror added in the 2023 update. Being able to choose versions with a different character, such as AUTECH, is also appealing. Another advantage of the Roox is that, thanks to its Mitsubishi siblings, the eK Space / eK X Space, you have a wider range of cars on the same platform to search from. Here is a rough guide. If you value availability, ease of choice, and resale value, the N-BOX is a better fit. If you value expressway driver assistance and a good view from the driver's seat, and want a well-equipped example for the price, the Roox is a better fit. Other representative rivals in the same class include the Daihatsu Tanto and Suzuki Spacia. Cargo-area usability and sliding-door specifications differ by model, so we recommend comparing based on the number of passengers and the luggage you carry.

4th-Generation Roox (2025–): The Fourth Generation with a "Rounded Square" Exterior and a Google-Equipped Infotainment System

Strengths of the 4th-Generation Roox
A Two-Tone Finish Inspired by Karahafu Gables, and a Choice of Camera Features Firsts for a Kei Car
The 4th-generation Roox is a kei super-height wagon that was fully redesigned about five years after the third generation debuted in 2020. It was previewed in August 2025 and officially announced in September of the same year, with deliveries beginning in October. As with the previous model, NMKV, a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, oversaw the overall project, while Nissan handled planning and development. Its sibling models are Mitsubishi's new Delica Mini and eK Space, also announced in September 2025. In February 2025, merger talks with Honda were called off, and Nissan was in the middle of a business turnaround. The fourth generation is a kei car launched during that period. The design theme is "Roomy×Max," which is also the origin of the model name. The aim is to make the body look as large as possible within the size limits for kei cars. A "rounded square" motif is used repeatedly in the headlights, rear combination lamps, door handles, wheels, and elsewhere. The two-tone body color is inspired by karahafu, the curved gable roofs found in traditional Japanese architecture. The color is split below the beltline, including the hood, and this paint scheme is a first for Nissan. The cabin was designed to be as relaxing as a living room, and together with the exterior, it won a 2025 Good Design Award. In terms of equipment, it offers an Intelligent Around View Monitor with moving object detection and a 3D view function, as well as Invisible Hood View, a first for a kei car. The ProPILOT driver assistance system is also available. In addition, it is the first Nissan kei car to adopt an infotainment system with Google built in. The lineup consists of two series: the standard Roox and the Roox Highway Star, which has a more upscale exterior. In Japan, super-height wagons with rear sliding doors and a tall roof are a popular choice for families who often drive children to and from school or help elderly family members in and out of the car. The fourth generation can be described as the generation that adds preventive safety and up-to-date infotainment to that kind of use.
Weaknesses of the 4th-Generation Roox
Few Used Units Available Yet, and the Two-Tone Paint and Electronics Need Checking on Each Vehicle
Deliveries of the fourth generation only began in fall 2025, so the number of units on the used market is still limited. Because it is a recent model with plenty of equipment, prices tend to stay relatively high within its class, and it is difficult to be selective about grade or body color. For export, a recent model year is an advantage in countries that set an age limit on imported vehicles. On the other hand, some countries restrict the registration of right-hand-drive vehicles, and in others the small displacement and narrow width of kei cars do not fit local registration categories. You need to check the rules of the importing country before arranging a purchase. One thing to watch on the exterior is the karahafu-inspired two-tone paint. Since the color is split below the beltline, including the hood, on vehicles that have had front-end repairs you should check that the paint dividing line and color shade match between the hood and fenders. Touch-up painting is said to take more work than on a single-color car. Misaligned lines can also be a clue to past repairs. The Around View Monitor, Invisible Hood View, and ProPILOT all rely on cameras and sensors. On vehicles that have had a bumper or windshield replaced, it is reassuring to check during a test drive and on the screen that there is no image misalignment and that no warning lights are on. The Google-equipped infotainment system and features that depend on Japan-only connected services may not work the same way outside Japan. It is safest to confirm before purchase how much of it can be used in your country. Early units of a new model may be subject to recalls or service campaigns. Use the chassis number to confirm that the manufacturer's fixes have been carried out. Also, some owners say the tall body is easily affected by crosswinds and can be tiring when driven mainly on expressways. This is a tendency of super-height wagons in general and is not a weakness unique to the 4th-generation Roox.
Rivals of the 4th-Generation Roox
Honda N-BOX (3rd Generation)
The easiest comparison, from the same period and with the same body type, is the third-generation Honda N-BOX. Launched in October 2023, it carried over the basic platform and powertrain of the previous model while updating the interior, exterior, and equipment. The N-BOX has long been a regular at the top of new kei car sales. There is also the N-BOX Custom with a more upscale exterior, making for a two-series lineup very similar to the relationship between the Roox and the Highway Star. For overseas buyers, the big difference is availability. Because the N-BOX sells in large numbers, it is easier to choose by year, color, and grade at auctions and used car dealers, and maintenance information and parts are said to be more widely available. Deliveries of the 4th-generation Roox only began in fall 2025, so finding a vehicle that matches your requirements can take time. On the other hand, the 4th-generation Roox has the advantage of being a generation about two years newer than the third-generation N-BOX. It focuses on camera features that help with parking and on narrow roads, such as the Google-equipped infotainment system, Invisible Hood View (a first for a kei car), and the Around View Monitor with moving object detection. The karahafu-inspired two-tone paint and "rounded square" design also give it a character no other car has. Another advantage is its sibling models, Mitsubishi's Delica Mini and eK Space. Although they look different, they share the same fundamentals, which broadens your options when searching for a vehicle. Other comparisons include the Suzuki Spacia, fully redesigned in November 2023, and the Daihatsu Tanto. If you prioritize the number of vehicles to choose from, parts availability, and resale value, the N-BOX is the better fit. If you prioritize newer-generation infotainment, camera features, and design, the 4th-generation Roox is the better fit. If you want an SUV-style exterior, the sibling Delica Mini is also worth considering. Even though they share the same body type, equipment varies greatly by grade, so we recommend comparing the equipment list for each candidate vehicle.
