Nissan DAYZ Purchase Guide

Nissan's mainstay kei tall wagon, born from joint development between Nissan and Mitsubishi

The DAYZ is a kei tall wagon that debuted in 2013 as the first kei car planned by NMKV, a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. It is a sibling of the Mitsubishi eK Wagon, sharing the same basic design, and is built at Mitsubishi's Mizushima Plant. The second generation, launched in 2019, was developed under Nissan's lead, gaining a new engine and platform as well as the ProPILOT driver assistance system. On the used market, the basic rule of thumb is to choose the widely available first generation if you want to keep costs down, or the second generation if you prioritize safety equipment and ease of driving on expressways.

First-Generation Nissan DAYZ (B21W / 2013–2019): Nissan's First Kei Tall Wagon Developed from the Planning Stage

Strengths of the First-Generation DAYZ

NMKV's first model, marketed on strong fuel economy and comfort features rare for a kei car

The first-generation DAYZ went on sale in June 2013. It was the first product of NMKV, a joint venture established by Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors for their kei car business, and it was the first kei car Nissan was involved in from the planning stage. Until then, Nissan's kei cars had been OEM models supplied by other manufacturers. For the DAYZ, Nissan is said to have mainly handled planning and marketing, while Mitsubishi mainly handled development and production. Mitsubishi sold its sister model as the eK Wagon. Because the two are mechanically identical, engine and suspension parts are said to be easy to source from either Nissan or Mitsubishi. The engine is a newly developed 660cc three-cylinder, and every model uses an XTRONIC CVT with an auxiliary transmission. At launch, the 2WD S, X, Highway Star X and Highway Star G were rated at 29.2 km/L under the JC08 cycle (Japan's fuel economy test standard at the time). This was advertised as the best fuel economy among kei tall wagons with an overall height of 1,550mm or more (according to Nissan's research as of June 2013). However, this figure was later corrected (see the Weaknesses section). The body uses 4% ultra-high-tensile steel and 52% high-tensile steel to reduce weight while maintaining safety. Equipment was generous for a kei tall wagon of its time. The Around View Monitor, which displays an image as if looking down on the car from above, was a first for a kei car. A touch-panel automatic air conditioner is standard on the regular X and on all Highway Star models. The front doors use Super UV-cut heat-insulating green glass that reduces ultraviolet rays and solar heat. These features are aimed at people who find parking difficult and those who use the car for daily shopping and school or work drop-offs. There are two looks to choose from: the standard model with a friendly face, and the Highway Star with a large grille featuring thick chrome bars. The Highway Star corresponds to Mitsubishi's eK Custom. At launch, Nissan group company Autech Japan released the "Rider" custom model. The "Enchante" accessible vehicle and a version with an assist grip were also announced at the same time. On the used market, both the standard model and the Highway Star are easy to find in this generation.

Weaknesses of the First-Generation DAYZ

This generation was caught up in a fuel economy scandal, and equipment varies greatly by model year

An unavoidable issue with this generation is Mitsubishi Motors' falsification of fuel economy test data, which came to light in April 2016. The DAYZ and its sister model, the eK Wagon, were affected, and sales were temporarily suspended. The catalog fuel economy figures were corrected, and the 29.2 km/L figure from launch is no longer valid. Old advertisements and used car listings may still show the uncorrected figure, so it is safer not to rely too heavily on listed fuel economy. Following this issue, Nissan took a stake in Mitsubishi Motors in 2016 and became its largest shareholder. In terms of specifications, every model uses a CVT, and no manual transmission is available. The naturally aspirated version of the 660cc three-cylinder is said to feel underpowered when merging onto highways or climbing hills. This tends to be true of naturally aspirated kei tall wagons in general. Some reviews also note that the vibration and noise at idle retain a typical three-cylinder feel. If you often drive long distances, it is worth checking this on a test drive. Many years have now passed since launch, and more examples have high mileage. On a test drive, check that the CVT does not judder when pulling away and does not make a whining noise under acceleration. Records of CVT fluid changes provide extra reassurance. On cars equipped with them, also check that the touch-panel air conditioner responds to every control and that all Around View Monitor cameras display correctly. For 4WD examples used in snowy regions, inspect the underbody for rust caused by road de-icing salt. Because the model was sold for nearly six years, safety and other equipment differ by model year. Preventive safety features such as autonomous emergency braking are fitted to some cars and not to others, even within the same generation. Do not judge by model year alone; check the equipment of each individual car. Note that the "DAYZ ROOX" released in 2014 is a separate, taller vehicle with sliding doors. Because the names are similar, be careful not to confuse them in listings. If exporting, be aware that in countries with age-based import restrictions, this generation may not yet be eligible for import.

Rivals of the First-Generation DAYZ

Suzuki Wagon R

The easiest car to compare with the first-generation DAYZ is the Suzuki Wagon R. The Wagon R popularized the kei tall wagon category and was still at the center of this class when the DAYZ launched in 2013. The Wagon R went through a model change during the DAYZ's sales period, so it is best to compare generations from the same era. The Daihatsu Move is also a representative rival in the same class, and which of the three to compare comes down to the buyer's preferences. From 2012 to 2013, the Wagon R, Move and DAYZ competed on catalog fuel economy figures. At launch, the DAYZ claimed the best fuel economy in its class. However, that figure was later corrected due to the fuel economy scandal. When comparing used cars, you will get a more realistic picture if you do not place much weight on differences in catalog fuel economy. In terms of choosing, the first-generation DAYZ's strengths are its comfort features and choice of looks. The DAYZ suits buyers who value features such as the Around View Monitor and touch-panel automatic air conditioning, or who like the chrome-heavy styling of the Highway Star. Since parts can be sourced from both Nissan and the Mitsubishi eK Wagon, some say parts are easier to arrange in export markets. Because Suzuki is a major kei car manufacturer, the Wagon R is widely available in Japan, making it easier to find a broad range of model years and conditions. The Wagon R suits buyers who want to pick a car with low mileage or in good condition from a large pool. Both are very similar in interior space and practicality. In the end, it is realistic to decide based on each individual car's condition, such as whether it has the equipment you want and whether its maintenance records are complete.

Second-Generation DAYZ (2019–): The generation in which Nissan took the lead, renewing the platform and engine, and the first kei car to offer ProPILOT

Strengths of the Second-Generation DAYZ

A generation that raised refinement with a new platform, a new engine, and the first ProPILOT in a kei car

The second-generation DAYZ went on sale in March 2019 following a full model change. As before, it is built under NMKV, a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors. For this generation, Nissan took charge of planning and development, renewing both the platform and the powertrain. The Mitsubishi eK Wagon / eK X are sister models and share many parts. The engine changed from the previous generation's Mitsubishi-built 3B20 to Nissan's BR06. The BR06 is based on the 800cc BR08 developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance for emerging markets, with the bore reduced to fit within the kei car displacement limit. Because it belongs to a different engine family from Mitsubishi's older unit, it is safer not to assume the same approach as with the previous generation when looking for servicing or parts overseas. There are three engine variants: naturally aspirated, a naturally aspirated engine paired with the SM21 motor in a Smart Simple Hybrid (BR06-SM21), and an intercooled turbo paired with the motor. All use the XTRONIC CVT, with a choice of 2WD (FF) or 4WD. In representative trims, the naturally aspirated engine produces 52PS and the turbo 64PS. The hybrid newly adopts a lithium-ion battery, and its regeneration capacity is about twice that of the Serena's S-HYBRID system. The smaller engine bay allowed a longer wheelbase, and the rear floor is flat with no hump. Cargo length grew by 135mm over the previous generation to 385mm. At launch, Nissan also highlighted pedals that are easy to operate even for petite women. It is a car clearly designed with owner-drivers who use it every day in mind. For safety, ProPILOT (driver assistance within a single lane) was offered on the Highway Star. This was the first kei car to carry ProPILOT. An SOS Call that connects to an operator in the event of an accident was also made available. At launch, versions without Intelligent Emergency Braking were also available. Only cars fitted with this braking system qualify as "Safety Support Car S <Wide>", a safety equipment category promoted by the Japanese government for elderly drivers. In September 2022, it received specification upgrades together with the Roox. A minor change announced in September 2023 brought a Digital V-motion grille and the new Nissan emblem. At the same time, Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) were adopted for the first time on a kei car, giving it safety equipment that covers a full 360°.

Weaknesses of the Second-Generation DAYZ

CVT only, with the turbo and ProPILOT limited to the Highway Star

The only transmission is a CVT; there is no manual. The turbo is available only on the Highway Star G Turbo variants, and the standard DAYZ does not offer ProPILOT. If you want the turbo or driver assistance, your only option is the Highway Star. Even if you prefer the look of the standard model, it is worth knowing that choosing by equipment narrows your options. The naturally aspirated engine produces 52PS in representative trims, and it has been described as having little in reserve on highways or uphill with four adults aboard. This is common among naturally aspirated kei cars, but if you will drive in a hilly area, the turbo is worth choosing. Some test-drive reviews at launch also noted that ProPILOT's following-distance control was a little sluggish when following a vehicle ahead from low speeds. The hybrid uses a motor and lithium-ion battery to assist acceleration, combined with idle stop. On a used car, check that no hybrid-system or idle-stop warning lights are on in the instrument cluster. The auxiliary battery for idle-stop vehicles costs more than a standard one, so it is also worth checking the replacement records. A camera for driver assistance is mounted at the top of the windshield. Check for cracks or stone chips around the camera. If the glass has been replaced, it is reassuring to confirm with the seller that the camera has also been recalibrated. The front-end design, including the grille, differs before and after the 2023 minor change. BSW and RCTA are fitted only to updated cars. If rear safety equipment matters to you, you will need to choose by model year, and part numbers for exterior parts also differ between early and late models. Although internal parts are shared with the sister eK Wagon / eK X, exterior parts are different. As a 2019-or-later model, it is not yet eligible for import in countries such as the United States that only allow vehicles over a certain age. Conversely, in countries with an upper age limit on imported vehicles, these model years are an easy choice.

Rivals of the Second-Generation DAYZ

Honda N-WGN (Second Generation)

The main comparison from the same period is the Honda N-WGN, which entered its second generation in 2019. Both are kei height wagons (regular-height kei wagons, not as tall as super-height wagons). They share the same combination: FF as standard with optional 4WD, a CVT, and both naturally aspirated and turbo engines. They also launched around the same time, making them easy to compare across the same model years on the used market. The differences lie in the powertrain and how driver assistance is offered. The DAYZ pairs the SM21 motor with both the naturally aspirated and turbo engines on hybrid versions, using electricity to assist starting and acceleration. The N-WGN uses the same S07B engine as the N-BOX, with no motor assist. For driver assistance, the N-WGN fitted the Honda SENSING safety system as standard on every trim and also adopted an electric parking brake. Since ProPILOT on the DAYZ is offered only on the Highway Star, the N-WGN lets you find a car with driver assistance without worrying about the trim level. The DAYZ suits buyers who like the bold look of the Highway Star or the motor-assisted driving feel. On late models from 2023 onward, rear safety equipment including BSW and RCTA is another strength. The N-WGN is seen as better suited to those who prioritize cargo-area practicality and driver assistance on every car. In terms of parts and servicing, the DAYZ is a sister model of the Mitsubishi eK Wagon / eK X, so parts are easier to find in regions where Mitsubishi's dealer network is strong. The N-WGN shares its engine with the N-BOX, so in regions that handle many Honda kei cars, it should be easier to find workshops with service experience. Which manufacturer's parts are more readily available in your country is also an important factor when choosing. The Suzuki Wagon R and Daihatsu Move are also kei height wagons worth comparing. However, their generation changes do not line up with the DAYZ, so we recommend comparing them by matching model years.
